![]() ![]() Simone Miles 10th Grader, S.R. Martin, San Francisco The popular Simone Miles has been an honor student at S.R. Martin College Preparatory Academy since the 6th grade. She loves Harry Potter and Teen Magazine, takes part in the school's sign language club, and loves math. For Simone, S.R. Martin is like home. "My number one complaint with the public school where Simone used to be was the violence," says Simone's mother Caroline. "Guns, knives, fights breaking out all around her. And this is elementary school! She was terrified and so was I." But that wasn't the only problem, reports Caroline. Teachers were spread too thin and there was a culture that supported mediocrity. "I want my kid to be the brain," says Caroline. But Simone was teased when she excelled. "She felt a lot of pressure not to stand out," says Caroline.
"At S.R. Martin the principal and teachers really care about Simone. It's like a family. I can even call Mrs. Martin [the principal] at home." Caroline, a single mom with an older daughter at S.F. State, says that finding the money for her share of Simone's tuition is a real challenge. "We have a sit-down together and talk about what we've got to give up. Birthdays and Christmas are pretty lean. But we always decide the education is worth it. At our house, the word 'can't' isn't in the dictionary." |
