Program Basics
Started in 1998, the program has provided scholarships
for underprivileged Bay Area youth to attend local private schools
chosen by their parents or guardians. The Guardsmen Scholarship
Program is privately funded.
- 194 students will receive scholarships for the
2002-2003 school year, up from 144 the year beforea giant leap
from the 22 students we funded in 1998, our first year.
- New scholarship recipients are chosen through an annual
lottery comprised of all new qualified applicants.
- The program pays 50% of tuition, up to a maximum of $2,000
annually. Tuition payments are made by the Guardsmen directly
to the private schools. Full tuition costs total between $3,000
and $4,000 per year at most of the schools we support.
- Our belief is that parental commitment is the best
determiner of student success, all other factors being equal,
such as differences in family income and parental education.
Parents are therefore accountable for the portion of the
tuition not covered by the Guardsmen. Our experience is that
even parents with very low incomes can meet this requirement
by taking advantage of school-based subsidies and financial
programs.
