SAN FRANCISCO CHARITY ORGANIZATION THE GUARDSMEN RAISE APPROXIMATELY $1.5MM+ IN DOWN ECONOMY

Money Raised Will Send Thousands of Local At-Risk Youth to Summer Camp and Private Schools

One of San Francisco's longest-standing charitable giving organizations, The Guardsmen, announced that the group has raised approximately $1.5MM during their 2009 fundraising year to fund indoor and outdoor educational programs for at-risk youth in the Bay Area. This accomplishment, surpassing the amount raised in 2008, was communicated at their annual Fund Drive Wrap-Up dinner, held September 1 at the San Francisco Giants' iconic AT&T Park.

"The Guardsmen has thrived each and every year in spite of economic conditions because of our strong and committed membership, as well as the continued support and generosity of local businesses, families and individuals that believe in the programs we fund and the youth we entrust with our future," stated current Guardsmen President Steve Sutro.

Each year, The Guardsmen raise funds through a wide variety of events planned and executed by their strong member base. The events include well-known traditional Bay Area events such as The Christmas Tree Lot at Fort Mason, The San Francisco Wine Auction, The Presidio 10 running race, The Guardsmen Bachelor Auction, The Big Game Luncheon, and The Guardsmen Sports Auction and Celebrity Dinner. Coupled with these popular long-standing events are new events, like the Trap & Skeet Tournament, which debuted this past year.

Funds raised from these events go directly toward supporting summer camp and private school scholarship programs for at-risk youth in our community. The Guardsmen give back to the community in other ways, including the renovation of Golden Gate Park's historic Horseshoe Pits. This newly revitalized site will play host to the Inaugural San Francisco International Open Horseshoe Tournament on September 12.

In addition to events, The Guardsmen raise funds for programs through donations and planned gifts from foundations and individuals, matching gifts from corporations, and corporate sponsorships. As an all-volunteer organization with minimal administrative costs, approximately 90 cents of every donated dollar goes directly towards supporting programs for disadvantaged youth.
