SAN FRANCISCO CHARITY ORGANIZATION THE GUARDSMEN RAISE APPROXIMATELY $1.5MM+ IN DOWN ECONOMY

Money Raised Will Send Thousands of Local At-Risk Youth to Summer Camp and Private Schools

One of San Francisco's longest-standing charitable giving organizations, The Guardsmen, announced that the group has raised approximately $1.5MM during their 2009 fundraising year to fund indoor and outdoor educational programs for at-risk youth in the Bay Area. This accomplishment, surpassing the amount raised in 2008, was communicated at their annual Fund Drive Wrap-Up dinner, held September 1 at the San Francisco Giants' iconic AT&T Park.

"The Guardsmen has thrived each and every year in spite of economic conditions because of our strong and committed membership, as well as the continued support and generosity of local businesses, families and individuals that believe in the programs we fund and the youth we entrust with our future," stated current Guardsmen President Steve Sutro.

SAN FRANCISCO CHARITY ORGANIZATION THE GUARDSMEN HELP RESTORE GOLDEN GATE PARK'S HISTORIC HORSESHOE COURTS AND HOST INAUGURAL TOURNAMENT

MAYOR GAVIN NEWSOM THROWS FIRST PITCH IN THE OPENING TOURNAMENT AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED COURTS IN GOLDEN GATE PARK

The Guardsmen celebrated the completion of Golden Gate Park's historic Horseshoe Courts renovation by co-hosting the Inaugural San Francisco International Open Horseshoe Tournament, Saturday September 12, 2009.

The Horseshoe Courts were renovated through a joint effort between the Guardsmen, the San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club, Golden Gate Park volunteers and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department. The Horseshoe Courts, located near McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park, were built as part of President Franklin Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s. Recently the courts had fallen into disrepair and were widely used for numerous illegal activities. The volunteers and Parks Department cut down and removed overgrown trees and brush, removed dirt from the horseshoe pits, repaired the backstops, repaired and painted part of the stone walls, repaved and painted the courts and sidewalks, and began installation of a metal railing and scoreboard to protect spectators from errant throws. In addition, they improved the oak woodlands, completed a new Rim Trail on the hilltop around the courts, and uncovered two car size sculptures of a horse and horseshoe pitcher that are currently being further restored by volunteers.
